Metal-Organic Architectures for Mild Catalytic Functionalization of Alkane Feedstocks
Instituto Superior Técnico, Centro de Química Estrutural, Portugal
This presentation will provide a summary of our recent results on the design, self-assembly generation, structural features, and catalytic application of different metal-organic architectures, namely discrete multinuclear metal complexes, coordination polymers (CPs), or metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). A special emphasis will be given to the copper-containing coordination compounds derived from aminoalcohol and carboxylic acid building blocks.[1] Applications of the obtained compounds as highly efficient bioinspired (pre)catalysts in model alkane functionalization reactions will be highlighted. These include: (1) the mild oxidation of saturated hydrocarbons by hydrogen peroxide into alcohols and ketones (“C–H to C–O functionalization”), and (2) the hydrocarboxylation of gaseous and liquid Cn alkanes, by carbon monoxide, water and potassium peroxodisulfate, into the corresponding Cn+1 carboxylic acids (“C–H to C–C functionalization”). Catalytic efficiency, substrate scope, mechanistic and selectivity features, role of promoters and effects of different reaction parameters will be discussed. Other examples of functional metal-organic architectures incorporating Fe, Co or Ni nodes with prospective catalytic applications in C–H functionalization or degradation of organic water pollutants will be presented.[2] Collaborations within the COST CHAOS network will be highlighted.
